The Crisis Nursery Project
Florida Summit 2006

The Crisis Nursery provides a warm, safe, and nurturing family setting for children ages 5-11. During the last fiscal year, it served 582 children (42% were under the age of four). In its shelter, children get to be children - play "red light, green light", "duck, duck goose", they eat lunch together, go to the park, play on the swing set, and ride bikes.

The Orlando Chapter of CoreNet Global and the Community Reinvestment Challenge (CRC) joined together for the Fall 2006 Community Reinvestment Challenge. The project revolved around the Children's Home Society of Florida's "Crisis Nursery".

During the Florida Summit in Orlando, November 2006, the Children's Home Society of Florida Crisis Nursery received a make-over from the Orlando community and CoreNet Global. Fifty-eight volunteers logged approximately 450 hours to make these children's dream come true.

This "dream come true" resulted in the following:
  • Enhancing the site by planting new trees and plants;
  • Updating the playground by replacing the old equipment with new;
  • Maintaining, repairing and painting the exterior;
  • Pouring concrete for a new basketball court;
  • Providing a covered outdoor break area;
  • Upgrading restrooms in Children's sleeping areas; and
  • Creating an award-winning "nest" constructed of 210 2" x 4" that will give the children a chance to use their imaginations as they play.
The ultimate goal of the project was to create an environment where the children staying at the home can be just that – children. From all perspectives, the program was a great success, in addition to the sweat equity provided by the volunteers, over $85,000 in cash and in-kind donations were secured through the combined efforts of participating CoreNet Global Chapters, the local financial sponsors and individual contributions from the CoreNet Global family and the Orlando community.

We thank those who joined our volunteer team and helped make a difference in a child's life. Every child in every neighborhood deserves a bright start to each day.
