Presentation by Jeff Hodson - Air New Zealand.

Both Air New Zealand and Schering-Plough have faced challenging market conditions which required organisational transformation. In Air New Zealand's case, it developed a workplace strategy to successfully consolidate 1,000 staff at its new corporate office in Auckland. It took advantage of this project as a means by which to facilitate a change in organisational culture. The extensive two-year change management strategy included transition teams and focus workshops, and has resulted in high staff engagement. The design was robust enough such that even when organisational restructures occurred during the course of the project, no changes in the workplace were required to accommodate the restructure.
Schering-Plough is in the fourth year of a global six-year organisational change strategy aimed at equipping the organisation for long-term sustained health and performance. As it progressed, it became evident locally that its existing work environment did not adequately reflect the vision, values and culture of the evolving organisation. Jones Lang LaSalle led Schering-Plough through the process of developing and embracing a new workplace strategy aligned with the vision. A workshop with directors defined the desired characteristics of the new workplace. The transition from a rigidly hierarchical organisation with an employee base firmly entrenched in the headquarters building they had occupied for 35 years to an open, highly-dynamic new workplace has been difficult, but ongoing communication and education of the workforce has resulted in transforming the most vocal critics into ardent supporters.
