Site Tours

1
New, Old and New Again
Madrid’s Architectural Landmarks

Torres Kio, Madrid

The tour commences at one of the modern symbols of Madrid, the twin KIO Towers (Torres Kio). The 26-floor, 114m high buildings were completed in the early 90 s and represented the entrance to Madrid's business district from the North Highway, also called the "Door of Europe". The leaning towers stand proud above the more conventional cityscape of Madrid. The two towers were built by the architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee using mainly metal and glass. They represent an Arch as they are inclined 15 degrees from their axis, the lean is intentional! The site tour brings you to the top of one of the towers where you will be amazed by the view!

Atocha Station

The tour also visits Atocha Station, the oldest & largest train station in Madrid. Built in 1851, today's "old" station dates back to 1892 only as the original building was burnt in a fire in the 1860's. The exterior structure was designed by Alberto de Palacio Elissagne, who also designed the Gustave Eiffel. The interior concourse had a facelift between 1985 and 1992 by Architect Rafael Moneo, enlarging it to four times its original capacity. Don t miss the ironwork inside or the view of the greenhouse from the upper level. The garden dates back to the original station, and was referred to as "the winter garden." Outside, check out the brickwork then look up around the roof on the west end for ironwork detail showing names of important Spanish cities. The station was recently brought to the forefront of international news after having been the focus of a terrorist attack on the 11th March 2004.
